Cat Pino is an artist who has a penchant for composition in her work. She works within and beyond the surface of the canvas, usually ripping into and building up various mediums while emphasizing geometry to ground the work with a sense of balance and calm. In application, she works on the floor rather than using an easel. This affords her more control, giving her the ability to stand back and observe each mark being made, while at the same time, allowing her a distance from the surface to surrender to the act of mark making. In her own words “I observe each mark, color, and texture in search for a pattern. If I don’t see a pattern I keep moving… [this]… allows me to surrender to the act itself similar to what a dancer feels when they connect to a song. It’s the movement that is the conduit to the creative process.”
Conceptually, Cat’s paintings are tied directly with self-discovery and inner auto-biographical exploration. For her, this discovery takes place within each piece as she struggles to reflect on her life and experiences.
Cat Pino is a Vancouver based artist who was born in Calama, Chile. She is a University of Saskatchewan graduate and her works are held in private collections in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.
